About Elim Church Swanley

Our Beliefs

At first glance, a prayer shawl and a ram’s horn may seem unusual on a modern Pentecostal church website. In truth, they take us back to our deepest biblical roots.

The Elim Pentecostal Church was founded on a conviction that Christianity is not detached from its origins but flows directly from the faith of Israel, fulfilled in Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit. Our theology is Bible-first, Spirit-led, and historically grounded. These symbols visually express that inheritance.

The prayer shawl (tallit) represents the ancient Jewish practice of wrapping oneself in prayer, obedience, and covenant. In Scripture, the shawl symbolises being covered by God—set apart, attentive, and consecrated. Jesus Himself would have worn such a garment. For the Church, it speaks of reverence, prayerful posture, and continuity with the worship life from which Christianity was born.

The ram’s horn (shofar) is one of the oldest instruments in the Bible. It was sounded to call God’s people to worship, repentance, spiritual alertness, and divine action. In biblical history, the shofar announced holy assemblies, marked moments of breakthrough, and proclaimed God’s sovereignty. In the New Testament imagination, it points forward—to awakening, to readiness, and to the voice of God calling His people to attention.

Together, these symbols remind us that Elim’s Pentecostal fire did not appear in isolation. It is rooted in Scripture, anchored in biblical worship, and aligned with the full story of God’s redemptive plan—from Genesis to Revelation.

They say: We honour our biblical foundations. We remember where the faith began. And we stand ready, prayerful, and awake before God.
